Job summary

The Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking a Road Design Engineer Associate (TE Associate) to join the Design Bureau within the Transportation Development Division in Ames. This full-time position supports highway design through analysis, 3D modeling, and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.

You will be responsible for producing highway designs aligned with national and state guidance, balancing safety, mobility, and costs, and pursuing licensure as a Professional Engineer within six

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil, chemical, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification within 10 months of hire.
• Licensure as a professional engineer within 6 years of hire for continued employment as Transportation Engineer Associate.
• Experience with 3D design and advanced civil engineering software for highway projects.

Responsibilities

• Participate in studies and develop alternatives for transportation improvements.
• Analyze data to determine optimal operating characteristics for highway projects.
• Produce highway designs aligned with AASHTO and Iowa DOT design guidance.
• Contribute to decisions balancing safety, mobility, environment, cost, and maintenance.
• Perform design and engineering analysis using 3D modeling for various project scales.
• Prepare roadway construction plans clearly conveying project aspects.
