Summary:

The competent Nurse, in the same or similar clinical setting, practices independently and demonstrates an awareness of all relevant aspects of a situation. Provides routine and complex care, with the ability to plan long-range goals or plans. Continues to develop the ability to cope with and manage contingencies of clinical nursing. Makes appropriate assignments and delegates to other care providers as a means to help manage the clinical situation.

As a Registered Nurse in our Emergency Department at CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline Hospital, you will be a highly skilled and trained medical professional who plays a vital role in the hospital. You will be responsible for providing immediate and efficient care to patients experiencing life-threatening injuries or illnesses. ER Nurses must have a strong knowledge base in emergency medicine, critical care, and trauma care to provide the best possible care to patients in emergency situations. ER Nurses work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment, and must be able to quickly assess and stabilize patients, then decide on the best course of treatment.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Provide nursing care utilizing the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients, consistent with ANA standards.
  • Address increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families according to their level of practice.
  • Administer medications and treatments using appropriate protocols; monitor for side effects and effectiveness.
  • Document patient history, symptoms, medications, and care provided.
  • Assess learning needs and provide education to patients, families, and caregivers; identify issues and resources.

Standard I: Utilizes the Nursing Process

  • Use critical thinking skills to assess physical, psychosocial, social, cultural, spiritual, and developmental needs of patients and families.
  • Communicate findings to appropriate healthcare team members.
  • Develop and modify care plans based on evidence-based practice to meet individual patient needs.
  • Implement patient care and therapeutic procedures; monitor and document treatment progress and teaching goals.
  • Evaluate the care and treatment provided and patient responses.

  • Anticipate and plan for admission, discharge, and transfer needs to facilitate patient flow.
  • Use appropriate communication tools to facilitate discharge process.
  • Coach on tools and techniques for order checking, cross-checking, and validation for accuracy.

  • Plan, direct, and evaluate nursing care during assigned shifts.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies properly.
  • Assess staffing needs and participate in resourcing efforts.
  • Educate and train others on operations, ethics, and regulations.

  • Implement patient safety practices to promote a safe environment and positive outcomes.
  • Engage in nursing research and quality improvement activities.
  • Provide evidence-based nursing care.
  • Communicate patient information effectively across care continuum.
  • Educate and train others on industry operations, ethics, and regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare laws and regulations.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

Clinical Policies and Standards

  • Follow standards and procedures; analyze documentation; ensure compliance; provide feedback; assist in development; work with control mechanisms.

Health Information Documentation

  • Maintain paper and electronic records; validate and update patient information; understand documentation flow; transcribe verbal orders; understand best practices.

Medical Equipment

  • Experience with medical equipment; troubleshoot; educate patients; ensure equipment safety; inspect and evaluate equipment.

Medical Order Processing

  • Experience with processing medical orders; system functions; error correction; considerations for standing orders.

Patient Chart Reading and Interpretation

  • Read and interpret patient charts; ensure accuracy; recognize anomalies; discuss and validate interpretations.

Patient Safety

  • Ensure safety in patient care settings; understand safety guidelines; respond to safety inquiries.
