Job description

Overview

To be part of our organization, every employee should understand and share in the YNHHS Vision, support our Mission, and live our Values. These values - integrity, patient-centered, respect, accountability, and compassion - must guide what we do, as individuals and professionals, every day.

As an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient-centered care. The RN practices professional nursing within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. The role of the RN is exemplified by leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and ensuring quality outcomes. YNHHS nurses operate within a framework outlined in our professional practice model, "Achieving outcomes through Autonomy and Accountability." We value Nursing Professional Governance and utilize evidence and data to support our practice with the patient and family always at the center.

The RN provides care that:

  • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family, incorporating cultural and diversity considerations.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with the patient, family, and healthcare team members.
  • Respects the patient's values, preferences, expressed needs, and knowledge of their healthcare situation in holistic data collection, formulation of healthcare outcomes, and evaluation processes.
Responsibilities
  1. Standards of Practice: RN practice is guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015). It involves assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care, health teaching, health promotion, and evaluation to ensure competent nursing care.
  2. Standards of Professional Performance: The RN demonstrates behavior aligned with ANA Standards (2015), including ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality of practice, professional evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN is accountable for their professional actions and engages in activities appropriate to their role and education.
Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred. All newly hired RNs must have current BCLS certification or obtain it within one month of hire.

Experience: All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.

Licensure: Licensed and currently registered in Connecticut. Clinical specialty certification is highly encouraged.

Special Skills: Same as experience; encouraged to advance through SPIRE program.
