RN – Neuro & Trauma

Employment Status: Full time

Overview

This 28 bed M/S unit is the primary unit for Trauma/Neurosurgery, Urology, and General surgery patients. The unit has a dedicated Neurosurgical ACP daily and serves as the alternate unit for orthopaedic surgery, hospitalist, and other medicine patients.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver the best in care and customer service, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy to patients, families, visitors, and colleagues.
  • Assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages.
  • Utilize delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team‑oriented, collaborative approach to patient care.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimum outcomes for patients of all ages.
  • Complete age‑specific admission and ongoing assessments, document them, and use the data to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborate with team members, patients, and families to develop, implement, and evaluate age‑specific interdisciplinary plans of care.
  • Revise plans according to changes in patient status.
  • Accurately administer treatments and medications, documenting in electronic medical records.
  • Identify patient/family educational needs, incorporate them into the plan of care, and document appropriately.
  • Contribute to organizational performance improvement activities.
  • Advocate for patients, protect their rights, and provide psychological, social, and cultural support.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development to care for patients appropriately.
  • Perform within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support evidenced‑based, quality patient care and performance improvement.
  • Exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, and resource consumption while improving patient outcomes.
  • Serve as a role model for clinical practice to colleagues, students, and physicians.
  • Manage resources, establish priorities, and modify the environment to meet patient care needs.
  • Complete assigned projects within specified time frames and according to guidelines.
  • Use problem‑solving methods to facilitate resolution of patient and personnel situations.
  • Take an active role in orienting new employees.
  • Provide feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
  • Contribute to practice, environmental, and work‑related improvements through participation in unit, hospital, and system activities.
  • Assist with educational activities for the unit and department.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing from an accredited college or an approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
  • AHA BLS‑HCP required; may need additional BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP certifications based on unit requirements.
  • Computer skills required for EPIC electronic medical records.
