How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare

Monday - Friday - Day shift. As a registered nurse, you are expected to consistently deliver the best in care and customer service and demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with our patients, their families, visitors, and with each other. As part of the health care team, RNs assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages. The registered nurse also utilizes delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team oriented, collaborative approach to patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care for patients of all ages to achieve optimum patient outcomes appropriate to the service area.
  • Complete age specific admission and ongoing assessments, document them, and use them to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborate with members of the health care team, patients and families to develop, implement, and evaluate an age‑specific interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Revise the plan according to changes in patient status.
  • Accurately administer and document treatments and medications for patients of all ages utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
  • Identify patient/family educational needs in a timely manner, incorporate them into the plan of care, and implement and document appropriately.
  • Contribute to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
  • Consistently demonstrate the role of patient advocate, protector of the patient’s rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
  • Determine and perform within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support direct or indirect evidence‑based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
  • Exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes.
  • Act as a role model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians.
  • Manage resources, establish priorities, and modify the environment to meet patient care needs.
  • Complete manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frames and according to pre‑established guidelines.
  • Use problem‑solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations presented in the work area.
  • Take an active role in the orientation of new employees.
  • Provide feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
  • Provide input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, and/or system activities which facilitate staff participation and input in decision making.
  • Assist with providing education activities for the unit or department.
What We Require
  • Education: Graduate of the school of professional nursing of an accredited college or graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
  • Licensure/Certification: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
  • Life Support: AHA BLS‑HCP required. May be required to obtain or maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on the specific work unit.
  • Other: Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).
