Overview
We are seeking a registered nurse for our Neuro PCU – a step‑down unit that specializes in the care of patients with non-traumatic brain injuries, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, seizure disorders, brain tumor/cancer, neuromuscular conditions, and the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. The RN is expected to consistently deliver the best in care, customer service, and demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy with patients, families, and colleagues.
Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimum outcomes for patients of all ages.
- Perform age‑specific admission and ongoing assessments and develop a patient‑specific plan of care.
- Collaborate with the health care team, patients, and families to develop, implement, and evaluate interdisciplinary plans of care.
- Administer treatments and medications accurately and document using EPIC and other automated systems.
- Provide timely patient and family (caregiver) education, incorporate learned needs into care plans, and document accordingly.
- Contribute to performance‑improvement activities and serve as a patient advocate, protecting patient rights and providing psychological, social, and cultural support.
- Apply knowledge of growth and development to meet patients’ needs and exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
- Plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, and resource consumption while improving patient outcomes.
- Serve as a role model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians.
- Manage resources, establish priorities, and modify the environment to meet patient care needs.
- Complete manager/director predetermined projects on time and according to guidelines.
- Utilize problem‑solving methods to resolve patient and personnel situations.
- Participate in the orientation of new employees and provide staff feedback using appropriate communication and documentation.
- Contribute to unit, hospital, and system activities, and participate in decision‑making processes.
- Assist in providing education activities for the unit/department.
Qualifications
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing from an accredited college or an approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
- Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
- Must hold AHA BLS‑HCP certification; may need to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, or NRP based on the specific unit.
- Computer skills required for use of EPIC electronic medical records.
