Job summary

Corewell Health is seeking a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) for Lakeland Hospital St Joseph in Michigan. The RNFA collaborates with surgical teams to perform perioperative duties with advanced nursing practice, supporting surgeons with intra-operative tasks and patient assessment.

The role requires RN licensure in MI, completion of OR-focused credentials, BLS/ACLS readiness, and a commitment to the AORN RNFA standards. Sign-on bonus available.

Qualifications

• Associates in Nursing required and RN licensure in Michigan.
• Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred within five years and CNOR/CNSA certifications desirable.
• Completion of competency-based orientation program and BLS/ACLS within specified timelines.

Responsibilities

• Actively assists the surgeon intra-operatively with observable and technical tasks.
• Apply advanced knowledge of anatomy and perioperative nursing to optimize patient outcomes.
• Collaborate with the health team within the RNFA scope of practice.

About the Unit

This unit is comprised of 12 surgical suites and one procedure room. The unit’s primary specialties are General surgery, Orthopedics, Cardiothoracic, Neurosurgery, ENT, Urology, Podiatry, GYN, Plastics and Hand. The unit houses two DaVinci robots for our robotically trained teams in General surgery, Cardiothoracic, Urology, and GYN.

Scope of Work

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA), possessing advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and utilizing extensive patient assessment skills, collaborates with all health team members to ensure the most optimal patient outcome. Performs all activities at an expanded level of perioperative nursing practice executed within the context of the nursing process. Intra-operatively, the RNFA actively assists the surgeon, performing observable, technical behaviors (cognitive, psycho motor, and affective) based on an extensive body of scientific knowledge, as specified in the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Core Curriculum for the RNFA.

Qualifications Required

Associates in Nursing Bachelors in Nursing within 5 years MI Registered Nurse (RN) Successful completion of a competency-based orientation program Vocational/Technical Actively enrolled or have completed an accredited first assistant program, preferably a program compliant with AORN recommendations for RNFA programs. AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 90 days Nurse in OR (CNOR) - CCI or Nurse in OR (CNOR) - AORN within 1 year Preferred RN First Assist, Certified (CRNFA) - AORN Association of perioOperative Registered Nurses required for MHC; otherwise preferred 2 Yrs preferred Or RN First Assist, Certified (CRNFA) - NASC National Assistant at Surgery Certification required for MHC; otherwise preferred 2 Yrs preferred Or Surgical Assistant, Certified (CSA) - NBSTSA National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting required for MHC; otherwise preferred 2 Yrs preferred #LI-CL #CorewellHealthCareers
