Job summary

The RN First Assist at Carle Health provides intra‑operative support to the surgeon, performs perioperative assessment, and conducts post‑operative evaluation as needed. The RNFA works collaboratively with the surgeon and OR team to ensure trays, instrumentation, and supplies are ready for each procedure.

Qualifications include an active RN license (IDFPR) with CNOR, BLS (AHA) within 30 days, and completion of an accredited RNFA program; minimum 2 years in perioperative nursing.

Responsibilities

• Assist surgeon in general and specialized surgeries
• Coordinate with OR team to ensure trays, instrumentation, and supplies are ready
• Provide patient care and support
• Administer medications
• Perform surgical procedures such as controlling bleeding, suturing, draping, tissue handling
• Position and prepare patient for surgery
• Monitor vital signs and heart rate
• Educate patient and family on operation and aftercare
• Post-operative assessments and monitor for pain/complications
• Review patient history and health assessments
• Monitor healing at surgery site
• Participate in research
• Scrub and circulate as needed
• Organize supplies and equipment to maintain efficiency
• Assist in room turnover
