Job summary

MUSC Health in Lancaster, SC is seeking a Nurse Extern to join our Emergency Department team. The role provides hands-on patient care experience under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, focusing on personal care, safety, and comfort while you continue nursing classes.

As a PRN position, you must be available to work as needed, with a bi-weekly minimum. Current ADN/BSN student, active BLS, and willingness to learn are required.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited ADN or BSN nursing program.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Student nurse with active clinical education status.

Responsibilities

• Assist nursing team with patient care activities and services.
• Help patients with hygiene, dressing, and mobility assistance.

Job Description

The Nurse Externs works under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. They performs multi-skilled duties within the limits of training and certification in caring for the patient. Assists nursing team with a variety of patient care activities and related services necessary in caring for the personal needs, comfort, and safety of patients. Assists patients with personal hygiene, dressing, walking. Changes bed linens and assists with patient transportation to tests and procedures. May serve and collect food trays and provide patients with between-meal nourishment. May record temperature or vital signs under the direction of a nurse.

PRN Status Clause

PRN / “as-needed” means you are not guaranteed a fixed schedule or hours. You work when they have needs in the schedule. You must be available to work at least 12 hours every two weeks (bi-weekly minimum), as specified in your PRN Commitment Agreement. Your actual hours will depend on department needs, not a set schedule. You may be asked to pick up extra shifts to cover gaps (like call-outs or shortages). Your total hours can go up or down—some weeks you might work more, some less.

Additional Job Description

Education: Currently enrolled Nursing Student in an accredited Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) program.

Licenses/Certification: Basic Life Support with American Heart Association is required
