Responsibilities
  1. Assess and Diagnose Nursing Care Needs
    • The priority of data collection is determined by the patient’s immediate condition of needs.
    • The pertinent assessment data is collected using appropriate assessment techniques (interview, observation, inspection, palpation, and review of reports and records).
    • Validation of patient problems and data collection involves the client, significant others, family, and healthcare providers as appropriate.
  2. Prescribes, Delegates, Supervises, and Evaluates Patient Care
    • Nursing interventions reflect current nursing practice and are based on scientific knowledge and documented on the record.
    • Delegates responsibility for nursing interventions according to the support staff level of education, orientation, experience, and scope of practice as mandated by the Nurse Practice Act.
    • Frequency of reassessments is appropriate to the patient's condition. Documents patients’ response to nursing interventions on the medical record.
    • Provides concise reports to receiving units, including necessary information related to patient care and progress during transfers.
    • Accurately transcribes and implements medical orders, ensuring communication to all affected staff.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of sterile/aseptic techniques and recognizes cardiac arrhythmias, following appropriate protocols.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and skills of all patient procedures and pain management.
  3. Teaching
    • Identifies learning needs of self and assists in developing and implementing learning opportunities.
    • Provides on-the-spot coaching in a constructive manner and in privacy.
    • Determines patient learning needs, provides instruction, or makes appropriate referrals, using suitable methods and materials.
    • Documents instruction content, type, and patient responses in the medical record.
  4. Maintains Safe and Therapeutic Environment for Patient Care
    • Accounts for all drugs, including Schedule II drugs, according to hospital policy.
    • Knows the location, care, and use of all equipment and supplies.
    • Seeks to reduce waste, follows procedures for faulty equipment, and assists in evaluating care products.
    • Properly completes incident reports, responds to emergency codes, and uses good body mechanics.
    • Reports safety or infection hazards and checks emergency equipment regularly.
    • Ensures patient safety during duties.
  5. Upholds Standards of Nursing Practice and Code of Ethics
    • Meets nursing practice standards and performs procedures according to policies.
    • Maintains licensure, supports patient rights, and adheres to infection control policies.
    • Follows hospital policies, participates in quality improvement, and maintains accessibility when on duty.
  6. Professional Self Development
    • Attends required CE and in-services, participates in staff meetings, and maintains competency.
    • Accepts supervision constructively.
Minimum Requirements
  • Current RN license in Kentucky or a work permit issued by KBN (licensure in a compact state acceptable).
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred.
  • BLS certification; ACLS within 6 months; PALS strongly recommended.
  • Basic keyboarding skills.
