Job summary

Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant to support patients and families in the outpatient ophthalmology clinic. You will perform clinical testing, document patient information, and help ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care.

Responsibilities include preparing patients for visual field testing, documenting history, and supporting patient flow under physician direction. Strong customer service and basic medical knowledge are essential in this role.

Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
• Strong patient and customer service skills.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to work effectively with others in a clinical environment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for visual field testing and other ophthalmic assessments.
• Obtain and document patient history, current eye medications, medical history, and chief eye concerns in the health record.
• Perform color vision, glare, and brightness testing as appropriate.
• Support an efficient patient flow by coordinating testing and adjusting the sequence of activities based on patient needs and physician direction.
• Adjust testing and patient care activities based on patient responses and condition, within the scope of the role and established protocols.
• Follow infection prevention and control policies and procedures to promote a safe environment for patients, families, and staff.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the patient health record.
• Follow professional standards, organizational policies and procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local requirements, including Joint Commission standards.
• Provide respectful, patient-centered support to patients and families throughout their visit.
