Job summary

Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, part of Mass General Brigham, is looking for an Ophthalmic Assistant to support the care team in an outpatient clinic. You will perform eye-related tests, assist with minor procedures, and help manage patient flow under supervision.

The role offers hands-on clinical exposure, on-site work at 243-245 Charles Street, and a 40-hour week with rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays. Training is provided for 0–1 year of experience.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
• 0–1 year of relevant experience preferred; training will be provided.
• Experience in ophthalmology, healthcare, or patient-facing setting preferred.
• Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office.
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of vision and eye-related tests, imaging, and assessments.
• Accurately identify and administer diagnostic eye drops as directed by the clinician.
• Assist the ophthalmologist with minor office procedures, including injections and cryotherapy, under appropriate supervision.
• Measure and document vital signs as needed for procedures and patient care.
• Prepare and maintain exam rooms and ensure necessary medical and ophthalmic supplies are available.
• Clean, calibrate, and perform basic maintenance on ophthalmic equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and infection prevention standards.
• Properly handle, store, and transport specimens, instruments, and medications.
• Support administrative and patient-facing activities, including triaging patient calls and managing electronic in-basket messages, as assigned.
• Provide cross-coverage at other ophthalmology services and locations as needed.
