Job Overview

This position provides respiratory care treatment, oxygen services, diagnostic testing, and ventilation support services to both in‑patients and out‑patients ranging in age from neonatal to geriatric. The respiratory therapist sets up, monitors, and weans oxygen therapy and artificial ventilation, draws and reports arterial blood gases and EKGs, delivers intermittent therapy, and assists with changing artificial airways as ordered by a physician.

Shift

Days, PRN – 6:30am-7pm; weekends as needed.

Facility

St. Bernard Parish Hospital.

Education

Required: Associate’s Degree.

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree.

Work Experience

Required: None.

Certifications

• Current License as a Respiratory Therapist in the state of practice.
• Certification by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 90 days of hire.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 90 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Computer proficiency for data entry and retrieval.
• Effective verbal and written communication, including the ability to present information clearly.
• Proficiency with Windows‑style applications and other role‑specific software.
• Strong interpersonal skills.

Job Duties

• Perform routine and advanced therapeutic procedures per established policy and procedure.
• Review and document all clinical information regarding each patient.
• Educate patients and coworkers on procedures and treatment plans.
• Perform diagnostic procedures.
• Deliver care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to patient age.
• Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, including privacy, introduction, communication style, and explanation of services.
• Adhere to current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory agency requirements; ensure compliance.
