Respiratory Therapist – Full Time – Nights

Shift: Night Shift 6:30 pm – 7:00 am, rotating weekends

Facility: St. Bernard Parish Hospital

This position provides respiratory care treatment, oxygen services, diagnostic testing, and ventilation support services to in‑patients and out‑patients ranging from neonatal to geriatric. The RT‑CRT set‑ups, monitors, and weans oxygen therapy and artificial ventilation; draws, analyzes, and reports arterial blood gases and EKGs; delivers intermittent therapy; assists with changing artificial airways; and provides services as ordered by a physician under established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and advanced therapeutic procedures according to established policy and procedure.
• Review and document all clinical information regarding each patient.
• Educate patients and co‑workers on procedures and treatment plans.
• Perform diagnostic procedures.
• Provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patient served in assigned area.
• Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures, requesting permissions and communication style.

Work Experience

• Required: None.

Certifications

• Current license as a Respiratory Therapist in the state of practice
• Certification by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist
• Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) must be obtained within 90 days of hire
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) must be obtained within 90 days of hire

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

• Computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and information retrieval.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
• Proficiency with Windows‑style applications, various software packages specific to the role and keyboard.
• Strong interpersonal skills.

Physical & Environmental Demands

The role requires heavy manual handling, frequent lifting (exceeding 50 pounds), occasional lifting over 100 pounds, and continuous physical activity. The employee must be able to stoop, bend, reach, and grab with arms and hands; maintain prolonged standing or sitting; travel between facilities; and work a flexible schedule (24/7, weekend, holiday, on‑call). Exposure to blood, body fluids, and communicable diseases is inherent.
