Summary
Under the general supervision of the Manager or Lead Therapist of the Respiratory Care Department, administers respiratory care to patients, obtains and analyzes blood gas specimens, and performs sleep studies and pulmonary function tests as ordered by a physician. Performs all essential functions with consideration of the age-specific needs of geriatric, adult, and adolescent patients. Fosters patient and family-centered care and healthcare services in accordance with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision, and values, considering all developmental stages and cultural patterns.
Responsibilities
Administers respiratory care according to physician orders or protocols. Accepts and records verbal and telephonic orders from physicians. Sets up and operates devices such as aerosol generators and bedside pulmonary function testing equipment. Monitors equipment to ensure proper operation. Performs chest physiotherapy and bronchopulmonary drainage procedures. Assists patients with breathing exercises utilizing incentive spirometry. Instructs patients and families in therapeutic modalities and equipment use. Monitors patient responses and suggests therapy adjustments. Maintains patient charts and records.
Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment, reports repairs needed. Performs arterial punctures, analyzes blood gas results, and reports findings. Calibrates and maintains blood gas and pulmonary function equipment. Conducts pulmonary function tests and sleep studies, records results, and consults with physicians. Maintains logs, cleans, and repairs equipment. Participates in emergency procedures and assists in equipment evaluation. Attends staff meetings and maintains compliance with safety and quality standards.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates Degree in an AMA-approved respiratory therapy program. Licensed by the State of Rhode Island as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. Interpersonal and analytic skills, leadership ability, and proficiency with respiratory and diagnostic equipment. Ability to perform all essential functions considering patient age-specific needs.
Experience
One year of experience as a respiratory therapist preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, and lifting. Exposure to patient elements. Visual acuity and manual dexterity required. Adherence to safety procedures is essential.
Supervisory Responsibility
May provide technical supervision as a 'charge therapist'.
