General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is seeking a Respiratory Care Practitioner to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The ideal candidate will be a certified respiratory therapist committed to providing exceptional patient care by demonstrating strong knowledge in respiratory therapy. Respiratory care is ordered by physicians according to established standards, practices, and protocols.

As a Respiratory Care Practitioner, you will possess a working knowledge of human respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology related to respiratory care. You should be familiar with the operation of respiratory care equipment and its application in a clinical setting. The role requires assessing hazardous conditions related to respiratory care and taking corrective actions. You must be able to work with patients of all ages (neonatal to geriatrics), remain calm under stress, and communicate effectively with diverse populations.

Primary Duties:

1. Assess the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of the patient, including educational needs, and document appropriately. Refer to competency validation documents for the populations served where applicable.
2. Perform all respiratory therapy treatments and services, including application, operation, monitoring, and management of all equipment and services such as oxygen, mixed gases, humidity, ventilators (invasive and non-invasive), bronchial hygiene, lung expansion, spirometry testing, EKG, and blood gas analysis.
3. Employ principles of therapeutic communication, interviewing techniques, problem-solving, and crisis intervention during patient care.
4. Respond to emergencies, participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, maintain the airway, provide oxygen and ventilation, and perform closed chest cardiac massage as needed.
5. Facilitate workflow efficiency by monitoring interdepartmental systems, departmental policies, and procedures, and recommending improvements. Review electronic medical records and physician orders throughout the shift.

Qualifications:

• Associate degree from an AMA-accredited respiratory care program (AAS or higher).
• CRT (Certified Respiratory Therapist) certification from NBRC is required.
• BLS certification required.
• ACLS, NRP, and PALS certifications required within one year of hire.
• Must be registry eligible; some acute experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related healthcare field.
• RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) certification from NBRC preferred.
