General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is seeking a Respiratory Care Practitioner to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The ideal candidate will be a certified respiratory therapist committed to providing exceptional patient care through demonstrating strong knowledge in respiratory care. Respiratory care is ordered by physicians according to established standards, practices, and protocols.

As a Respiratory Care Practitioner, you will possess working knowledge of human respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology related to respiratory care. You should be familiar with the operation of respiratory care equipment and its application in a clinical setting. The ability to assess hazardous conditions and take corrective action, work with patients of all ages, remain calm under stress, and communicate effectively are essential skills.

Primary Duties:

1. Assess the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of the patient, including educational needs, and document appropriately. Refer to competency validation documents where applicable.
2. Perform all respiratory therapy treatments and services, including application, operation, monitoring, and management of equipment such as oxygen, mixed gases, humidity, ventilators, bronchial hygiene, lung expansion, spirometry testing, EKG machines, and blood gas analysis.
3. Employ principles of therapeutic communication, interviewing techniques, problem-solving, and crisis intervention during patient care.
4. Respond to emergencies, participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, maintain airway, provide oxygen and ventilation, and perform closed chest cardiac massage.
5. Facilitate workflow efficiency by monitoring interdepartmental systems, departmental policies, and procedures, and making improvement recommendations. Review electronic medical records and physician orders throughout the shift.

Qualifications:

1. Associate degree from an AMA-accredited program in respiratory care (AAS degree or higher).
2. CRT (Certified Respiratory Therapist) credential, NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist or Pulmonary Function Technician.
3. BLS certification required.
4. ACLS, NRP, and PALS certifications required within one year of hire.
5. Registry eligibility; some experience preferred.

Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in a related healthcare field and RRT certification from the NBRC.
