Job summary

Johns Hopkins Intrastaff is seeking a PRN Respiratory Therapist to support patient care at Howard County General Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine. You will provide comprehensive respiratory care to adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional outcomes.

The ideal candidate will have an Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy, active Maryland license, RRT, and BLS/ACLS. NICU experience and NRP/PALS are preferred.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy or related field is required.
• Maryland Respiratory Care Practitioner License is required.
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential is required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required.
• NRPs and PALS certifications strongly preferred.
• NICU experience preferred; experience with adult, pediatric, and neonatal populations is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Provide respiratory assessment, treatment, and monitoring for patients with cardiopulmonary compromise.
• Administer invasive and non‑invasive ventilation, inhaled meds, oxygen, humidity therapy, airway management, and airway clearance therapies.
• Chest tube management in NICU; blood gas collection and analysis; intra‑hospital transport.
• Perform diagnostic testing and interpret data to guide care decisions.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and the care team to implement individualized plans.
• Participate in clinical pathways and deliver patient‑centered care.
• Respond to emergencies with critical respiratory support.
• Educate patients and families; document in electronic health records; ensure regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

• Provide respiratory assessment, treatment, and monitoring for patients experiencing cardiopulmonary compromise.
• Administer a full range of respiratory care modalities, including:
  • Invasive and non‑invasive mechanical ventilation
  • Inhaled medication and aerosol therapy
  • Medical gas administration and oxygen therapy
  • Humidity therapy
  • Airway management and maintenance
  • Bronchial hygiene and airway clearance therapies
  • Chest tube management (NICU only)
  • Blood gas collection, analysis, and management
  • Intra‑hospital patient transport
• Perform diagnostic testing and interpret clinical data to evaluate patient response and make evidence‑based recommendations for continued care.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
• Participate in clinical pathways and contribute to the delivery of high‑quality, patient‑centered care.
• Respond effectively to emergency situations, providing critical respiratory support when needed.
• Educate patients and families on respiratory conditions, treatment plans, and discharge or home‑care instructions.
• Maintain accurate and timely electronic health record documentation, including clinical charting, billing, hand‑off communication, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Required

  • Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy or a related field required.
  • Current Maryland Respiratory Care Practitioner License required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.

• Preferred

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification strongly preferred.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification highly preferred.
  • Previous experience providing respiratory care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) preferred.
  • Experience caring for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patient populations in an acute care hospital setting is a plus.
