Job summary

HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital in Hudson, FL is seeking a Respiratory Therapy Extern PRN to support patient care under supervision of licensed therapists. You will assist with non-invasive therapies, operate equipment, document care, and participate in safety and quality initiatives as you complete your respiratory therapy education.

Requirements include current enrollment or recent graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program and BLS within 30 days of start.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled (or recently graduated from) in accredited Respiratory Therapy program
• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

Responsibilities

• Gathers patient information for basic assessments under supervision
• Sets up and operates respiratory therapy equipment and supplies
• Monitors physiological response to therapy (vital signs, oximetry) and communicates changes
• Administers respiratory interventions and completes assigned patient care activities for non-critical patients
• Teaches and demonstrates respiratory care activities to patients and representatives
• Participates in emergency care and resuscitation within the scope of BLS certification
• Maintains and cleans respiratory equipment and ensures safe, organized environments
• Documents pertinent data on the patient’s medical record after services

Job Summary And Qualifications

The Respiratory Therapy Extern assists in providing patient care within the various common modalities of respiratory care, under the supervision of a licensed Respiratory Therapist. The Respiratory Therapy Extern assists staff by caring for patients, maintaining patient records, and ensuring the proper operation of respiratory care equipment, in accordance with the Extern’s documented education and demonstrated competencies, applicable state laws, regulatory requirements, and institutional guidelines. The Respiratory Therapy Extern is currently enrolled in (or recently graduated from) an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy and can perform higher-level procedures once competency is achieved.

• Gathers patient information for basic patient assessments and non-invasive respiratory care activities under the supervision of a licensed Respiratory Therapist.
• Sets up and operates various types of equipment, medical gas, and disposable medical products used in routine respiratory care activities, following specific parameters for treatment.
• Monitors physiological response to therapy, such as vital signs, pulse oximetry, auscultation, and consults with the preceptor and/or shift supervisor for changes
• Administers respiratory interventions, oximetry evaluations, and completes assigned patient care activities for non-critical patients in accordance with applicable state regulations, demonstrated competency, and organizational policy.
• Teaches and demonstrates respiratory care activities to patients and their representatives.
• Participates in emergency care and resuscitation efforts within the scope of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and demonstrated competency.
• Requests assistance/guidance as needed to maintain an environment of safe quality care.
• Disassembles, cleans, assembles, and tests all respiratory equipment according to department policies and procedures.
• Documents all pertinent data on the patient’s medical record following completion of any service.
• Maintains an adequate inventory of oxygen gas cylinders in department and patient care areas.
• Performs inventory and replenishes Respiratory Care supplies in designated areas.
• Maintains a clean, organized, safe environment.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” and “Mission and Value Statement.”
