Xcel Energy is seeking interns to support the Northern States Power (NSP) Resource Planning team within the Integrated System Planning organization in Minneapolis, MN. This paid internship develops analytical skills and provides hands-on training, networking, and leadership presentation opportunities.

The role involves supporting multiple resource planning workstreams, presenting to leadership, and collaborating with internal stakeholders. May 24, 2027 start; hybrid in-person work required.

Qualifications

  • Currently a student enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Pursuing a degree in finance, economics, OR, mathematics, business, data analytics or engineering
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours/week) or part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours/week) and commute to the designated location per hybrid policy

Responsibilities

  • Participate in weekly meetings to track resource planning workstreams
  • Contribute to development/approval of the NSP resource expansion plan
  • Gather input assumptions for modeling from internal stakeholders
  • Prepare presentation materials for external stakeholder engagement
  • Conduct research on MISO workshops related to resource accreditation and planning reserves
  • Support data analysis for decisions on generation asset retirement, extension and expansion
  • Assist in soliciting new long-term capacity and energy resources via RFPs
  • Evaluate bids with internal SMEs using financial, economic, environmental criteria
  • Gather bid information to support modeling efforts
  • Prepare executive presentation materials for approval

Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support the Northern Power Company (NSP) Resource Planning team in our Integrated System Planning organization in Minneapolis, MN. The paid internship provides an opportunity to showcase your analytical ability to support various resource planning workstreams in our five-state Upper Midwest service territory. The program provides practical work experience to develop your existing skillset, present to leadership, and collaborate with key internal stakeholders. The intern will be relied upon to play a role in achieving resource planning objectives and goals. The program will allow you to apply what you’ve learned in school and further enhance your knowledge through hands‑on training and provide opportunities to network and learn with other interns across the Integrated System Planning organization.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Participate in the weekly meetings to track various resource planning workstreams
  • Contribute to the development and approval of the NSP resource expansion plan.
  • Working with internal stakeholders to gather input assumptions for modeling
  • Preparing presentation materials for external stakeholder engagement
  • Conducting research on various MISO workshops on resource accreditation, planning reserve margin and other relevant topics
  • Conducting research on cost assumptions for various generation types and emerging technologies
  • Performing data analytical work to support strategic decisions on generation asset retirement, extension and expansion
  • Contribute to executing Request for Proposals to solicit new long‑term capacity and energy resources.
  • Working with internal subject matter experts to evaluate bids using financial, economic, environmental and other criteria
  • Gathering bid information to support modeling effort
  • Preparing presentation materials for executive approval

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:

Current student, Graduate School Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in finance, economics, operations research, mathematics, business, data analytics, engineering Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.

Preferred Qualifications:

3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher Completed 1 year of graduate coursework Experience or Proficiency with data analytics tools.

Non-Bargaining The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $22.10 to $27.90 per hour
