Job summary

New Mexico Highlands University seeks a Resident Director/ Housing Aide to support student housing operations on the Las Vegas campus. You will supervise Resident Assistants, coordinate programming, and help residents grow academically and socially within a community living environment.

The position offers an on-campus hourly rate and includes room in housing with 20 hours paid at the posted rate, under the Housing and Student Conduct department.

Qualifications

  • Education: NMHU student enrolled with at least six credits.

General Job Description

Job description may include varied and moderately complex duties involving a moderate degree of responsibility and judgment. Usually requires previous training or equivalent experience. May direct or coordinate activities of other student employees. Training new hires; Managing schedules; Providing support to students (tutors, peer mentors, orientation leaders); Conduct presentations; Managing confidential information; Maintain regular attendance; and, Perform other job duties as assigned.

Specific Duties

The Resident Director is responsible for the management and student development operation of an area of 70-300 students. This includes working with the Director of Housing and Student Conduct and other staff to develop, implement, and evaluate a program providing an environment promoting individual growth, learning, academic success, and a sense of responsibility for self and community among residents. The Resident Director plays an important role in the supervision, daily operations and management the residence halls and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Actively get to know the residents of the residence hall and be available for those needing assistance.
  • Uses discretion in communicating personal conversations with residents. Knows and makes referral to other offices on campus when appropriate.
  • Will provides leadership, leadership training, and resources for residence hall government.
  • Works with students and Resident Assistants to develop and implement programs that encourage learning, academic success and individual growth as well as providing social and recreational opportunities.
  • Assists residents in understanding community living concepts, including respect for the rights and privacy of all members of the community.
  • Clarifies and interprets University and residence hall policy to residents, documenting both inappropriate behavior as well as violations of those policies.
  • Works with the Director of Housing and Student Conduct to implement disciplinary sanctions when necessary.
  • Maintains accurate records (e.g. incident reports, duty schedules, rosters, occupancy, etc.)
  • Coordinates resident check-in/check-out and supervises all hall openings/closings.
  • Maintains daily contact with Director of Housing and Student Conduct as well as checking mailbox in office.
  • Knows emergency procedures and responds to all emergencies in the hall, notifying the Director and other staff as appropriate.
  • Conducts regularly scheduled fire drills.
  • Supervise monthly room and residence hall inspections and turn in to the Housing office the associated reports.
  • Initiates maintenance requests as needed and follows up appropriate.
  • Available to students and staff during regularly scheduled hours.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the Resident Assistant selection process each term, including summer.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Resident Assistant training
  • Assist with the development of leadership training programs for residence hall and family housing students.
  • Maintain accurate records of training participation.
  • Coordinate summer student and/or conference housing.
  • Participate in all orientation and in-service sessions.
  • Coordinate disciplinary process.
  • Prepare requested and/or needed reports and perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Housing and Student Conduct.
  • Conducts regular informal evaluations of job performance and an annual formal evaluation of Resident Assistants and Residential Peer Mentors in assigned hall(s).
  • Conducts weekly meetings with Resident Assistants and regular meetings with other student staff in hall(s).
  • Provide day-to-day direction, support, and training of Resident Assistants and other student staff in hall(s).
  • Develops and distributes building duty schedules.
  • Additional employment may not be accepted without prior written approval of the Director of Housing.
  • An exact record of hours worked is not required.
  • All parties are in agreement with the relevant factors including any restrictions, limitations or expected interruptions during an employee’s personal time, such as eating and sleeping periods.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: College student at NMHU enrolled with a minimum of six (6) credit hours. High school diploma or GED . Experience: Some clerical/office experience.
