Primary Purpose of Position: Under the supervision of the nursing team, the Resident Assistant performs direct resident care, assists with activities of daily living, and provides a safe environment in which the residents live.
Job Duties:
- Works alone giving total care or assists residents with activities such as tub baths or showers, perineal care, dental, hair, nail, shaving, dressing and undressing, applications of make-up, hearing aids, and eyeglasses. Provides for elimination needs and changes protective padding, toileting with bed pan, urinal, or taking residents to the bathroom, Foley catheter care. Assists with ambulation, walkers, and transfers using gait belts.
- Answers all call lights and pendants promptly.
- Encourages active participation of residents in meeting their needs by promoting individualized, restorative care, attending activities, council meetings, and family involvement.
- Takes and records temperatures, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and weight.
- Feeds and/or assists residents with meals, encouraging the use of adaptive devices.
- Encourages hydration and balanced nutritional food intake.
- Observes and reports pertinent information concerning changes in behavior or physical state of a resident to the charge nurse.
- Explains all procedures to residents before carrying them out.
- Receives assignments and instructions from the charge nurse and refers to resident care sheets for specific care needs.
- Demonstrates proper hand washing, isolation techniques, universal precautions, food handling, linen handling, and cleanliness of resident areas.
- Demonstrates prevention and intervention techniques used in caring for confused, wandering, or combative residents.
Qualifications
- CBRF certification: Fire Safety, Standard Precautions, First Aid and Choking, Medication Certification
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to work in a team environment
