Job summary

The Medical College of Wisconsin, Inc. is seeking a Lab Assistant to support sponsored research projects. You will perform routine and complex experiments, prepare media, culture cells and assist in data collection and analysis under supervision.

You will monitor inventory, order lab supplies, and help maintain equipment while ensuring accurate records and compliance with safety and quality standards. Some evenings or weekend work may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; 1 year experience in a lab setting preferred.
  • Strong documentation and record keeping skills.
  • Ability to operate and maintain specialized lab equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out routine and complex experiments.
  • Monitor inventory and order lab supplies; manage purchasing.
  • Prepare media and maintain cells by culturing techniques.
  • Participate in PI meetings; evaluate data validity.
  • Oversee daily lab operations in PI absence.
  • Assist in development and implementation of protocols.
  • Record and compile accurate records; communicate summaries.
  • Evaluate data and perform QC of assays.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain specialized equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SummaryUnder general direction carry out experimental design for sponsored research projects, including compilation and analysis of data generated.Primary ResponsibilitiesCarry out routine and complex experiments.Monitor inventory and order lab supplies; carry out assigned duties for ordering, maintaining supply of inventory.Prepare media and maintain cells by various culturing in techniques.Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data as needed.Oversee daily lab operation in the absence of the supervisor or Principle Investigator.Assist in development and implementation of research protocols.Record and compile accurate records and communicate summaries of experimental results.Help evaluate, interpret, and assess experimental data and quality control of assays.Operate, calibrate and perform routine maintenance on specialized equipment used in research.Other duties as assigned.Knowledge – Skills – AbilitiesKnowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics, documentation, and records management.Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.QualificationsAppropriate experience may be substituted for education an on equivalent basis.Minimum Required Education: Bachelor’s degreeMinimum Required Experience: 1 yearPhysical RequirementsWork requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.Work EnvironmentOccasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids.
