Job summary

University of Arizona Biomedical Engineering is seeking an individual to support in vivo and in vitro research in the PI's laboratory. The role includes mouse colony husbandry, protein purification, and maintaining equipment, with opportunities to train students on standard procedures.

The position involves creating, implementing, and documenting standard operating protocols, including Western blotting and tissue processing, and may extend to data analysis for investigator reports.

  • Maintain and monitor mouse colony in sterile vivarium per IACUC standards
  • Breed mice, replace colonies, and perform weaning
  • Prepare and purify proteins including site-directed mutagenesis and bacterial transformation
  • Track inventory and order supplies according to university policies
  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain lab equipment and organize gear
  • Develop and implement standard operating protocols (e.g., Western blotting, DNA/RNA isolation, tissue processing)
  • Analyze data and prepare summaries for weekly lab meetings with detailed records

Job description

Biomedical Engineering is seeking an individual to support the PI's laboratory research. This position supports multiple aspects of in vivo and in vitro experimentation in the laboratory, including mouse colony husbandry with minimal supervision, protein preparation and purification, maintaining laboratory equipment and reagents, and administrative tasks such as ordering associated with day-to-day laboratory maintenance. The individual will implement, create, and write standard lab protocols and may train students or staff on basic laboratory procedures or proper equipment use.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain and monitor mouse colony in sterile vivarium in accordance with laboratory and IACUC standards including:
  • Breeding, timely replacement of breeding mice, and weaning.
  • Mouse identification via ear tagging, toe tipping, and genotyping PCR
  • Execute protocols related to protein preparation and purification including site-directed mutagenesis, bacterial cell transformation, and column purification.
  • Perform administrative support tasks such as:
  • Tracking inventory and ordering supplies in accordance with university purchasing policies
  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain laboratory equipment
  • Organize laboratory equipment and prepare standard chemical stocks and buffers
  • Develop, write, and implement standard operating protocols including western blotting, DNA/RNA isolation, and mouse tissue processing.
  • Analyze data for the investigator and prepare summary reports for weekly lab meetings. Keep an accurate and detailed record of experiments and results.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline.
  • Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analysis and skill in their application. Skill in analyzing and evaluating data.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
