Performs a variety of independent and complex laboratory work and experiments. Analyzes and interprets data, compiles results, and prepares reports. Maintains inventory, ordering, and logs. Writes manuscripts and grant proposals and prepares data visualizations.

UPCI Basic Research Administration

  • Management responsibilities: They will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations to ensure smooth and efficient workflow. Key responsibilities include maintaining inventory and ordering supplies, overseeing equipment maintenance, organizing and cleaning lab spaces, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory protocols. The technician may serve as the lab’s Safety Officer and assist in onboarding new personnel. While not responsible for experimental design, the technician supports research activities by preparing reagents, maintaining cell cultures, and performing routine molecular biology techniques, helping to ensure the lab operates effectively and remains research-ready.
  • Oversight of supply management: Yes. The technician will be responsible for ordering supplies, maintaining inventory, and ensuring that the lab remains stocked with necessary reagents and consumables.
  • Types of lab experiments:
  • Basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, Western blotting, DNA/RNA/protein extraction)
  • Cell culture
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Possibly some assistance with animal work in collaboration with the postdoc
  • Independent work and determining protocols: The technician will be expected to work semi-independently once trained and follow established protocols. They will not be responsible for experimental design or developing novel protocols but should be comfortable troubleshooting and performing standard lab techniques with minimal supervision

Essential Functions

The lab technician essential functions are to ensure smooth daily operations by maintaining inventory, ordering supplies, coordinating equipment upkeep, organizing workspaces, and enforcing safety and regulatory standards

Physical Effort

Little physical effort required. Duties are primarily sedentary. May be required to move objects up to 25 pounds occasionally.
