The research technician will support exciting research projects at the Pittsburgh Institute forNeurodegenerative diseases (PIND). The projects within this laboratory focus on identifying oxidative stress-related pathogenic mechanisms and potential therapeutic pathways in Parkinson’s disease. The research technician will work closely with other members of the PIND. Primary responsibilities will include performing mammalian and human cell culture techniques, Western blotting, molecular and biological assays, and immunostaining of both cultured cells and fixed animal tissue. May require other technologies, so must have a willingness to learn new methods. Perform general laboratory duties, such as making buffers and media. Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies. The ideal candidate will be an effective communicator, possess attention to detail, work well in teams, and have excellent organizational skills. A bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Biological Sciences or related field is preferred. Previous experience in basic cell and molecularbiology techniques is a plus but not required
Job Summary
Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.
Essential Functions
Candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree in biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, or a related discipline. Prior experience in a research laboratory setting is strongly preferred. Familiarity with standard laboratory techniques—such as pipetting, gel electrophoresis, and microscopy—is expected. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong organizational abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and effective communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively within a team, is essential. A willingness to learn new methods and to adapt to changing project demands is also crucial.
Preferred Qualifications:
Additional experience with laboratory animal handling, histological techniques, or the use of data analysis software such as ImageJ or GraphPad Prism will be considered an asset. Knowledge of biosafety practices and chemical hygiene procedures is also desirable.
Physical Effort
Must be able to get around a university setting. Some lifting non-heavy. Must be able to carry out standard laboratory tasks, requiring good vision and excellent manual dexterity.
