Job summary

The University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT) is seeking a Research Software and Data Engineer for its Research Computing team to design and implement secure software, data workflows, and data science-focused solutions that enhance productivity and reproducibility.

Work involves collaborating with researchers, training others, and guiding project planning within IT and campus units. Strong programming and cloud experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Three to five years experience working in software and data engineering environments.
• Additional work experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis for up to four years.
• Knowledge of batch processing, relational databases, data science tools, and data pipelines/ETL processes.
• Experience with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and JAX.
• Experience creating and operating container-based infrastructure; knowledge of Docker.
• Knowledge of GPU programming.
• Programming in Julia, C/C++, FORTRAN, Python, and R.

Responsibilities

• Design, plan, and implement secure, compliant software and data workflows for researchers.
• Collaborate with researchers to understand software and data needs and translate them into solutions.
• Provide technical training and contribute to project management for research software work.
• Automate cloud account provisioning and adapt workflows to cloud environments.
• Work with IT and university teams to navigate tools, processes, and services.
