Job summary

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore seeks a Research Software Engineer for the PREP program with NIST collaboration. The role focuses on building sustainable software infrastructure for measurement service projects and embedding within cross‑project teams.

You will design, develop, test, deploy and maintain databases, workflows and scientific software, contributing to reproducible research and long‑term sustainability in a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science, information technology, a STEM field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, SASS, and JavaScript for user‑facing layouts and behavior.
  • Server‑side languages or runtimes Node.js and PHP, alongside MongoDB.
  • Version control systems like Git, API integration, responsive design, and debugging/testing.
  • Linux based file system and programming; experience building data pipelines and reproducible workflows.
  • Library/API design, release management, documentation for users and developers, automated testing and CI.
  • Ability to work with researchers adopting modern, collaborative software workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Design, expand, and deploy to an existing scientific database layout supporting active research and internal datasets.
  • Develop, refactor, profile, test, and package prototype code for long‑term maintainability and performance.
  • Develop new user‑friendly features based on data input forms and display of data for a reference material dataset website.
  • Develop features to store, retrieve, and manage files related to data records.
