Outokumpu Chrome Oy in Londonderry, NH, seeks a Senior Research Engineer for the EvoMaterials Team to develop sulfur-based metallurgical processes at a pilot plant in Southern New Hampshire. You will lead design, analysis, and optimization of high-temperature sulfur systems for new ferroalloy and stainless steel production.

The role requires an MS/PhD in related fields, strong data analysis ability, and leadership and communication skills.

Qualifications

• MS/PhD from an accredited college or university in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry, or closely related field.
• Strong theoretical and operational background in elemental sulfur handling.
• Expertise in design, operation, and safety considerations for high temperature sulfur processing systems.

Responsibilities

• Designing and supporting operation of high temperature pyrometallurgical trials of new sulfur-containing metallurgical processes at the pilot scale.
• Analyzing thermodynamic, kinetic, mass transport, chemical, and operational phenomena to inform process scalability from pilot to industrial scales.
• Evaluating pathways and conditions for sulfur handling across mineral processing, metal smelting, and exhaust gas treatment operations at industrial operating scales.
• Calculating mass and energy balances to evaluate the competitiveness of newly identified metals production processes.
• Communicating results with EvoMaterials Team and stakeholders within Outokumpu.

Senior Research Engineer

In Outokumpu’s EvoMaterials Team, we aim to leverage the best available avenues in both state of the art technologies and emerging disruptive innovations to establish a new paradigm in environmentally sustainable and geopolitically secure metals production. Our scientific and engineering efforts are experimentally focused on inventing and validating sulfur-based technical solutions for critical materials production and deep decarbonization via sulfur-based processes. We are seeking a decidedly motivated and highly creative Senior Research Engineer to work at our new pilot plant facility in Southern New Hampshire. Together, we will collaboratively address challenges in sulfur technology development for new ferroalloy and stainless steel manufacturing processes. As a member of our Team, you will be key part of our effort to design, demonstrate, and implement new sulfur-based mineral treatment and metal smelting processes for a range of materials and applications at pilot and industrial scales.

• MS/PhD from an accredited college or university or equivalent industrial experience in one of the following areas: Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry, or a closely related field
• Strong theoretical and operational background in elemental sulfur handling
• Expertise in design, operation, and safety considerations for high temperature sulfur processing systems, including but not limited to Claus reactors, sulfur combustion furnaces, sulfuric acid production, nonferrous metallurgical exhaust treatment, or similar industrial processes
• Proficiency in data analysis and documentation
• Creativity and a strong desire to innovate in the metals industry

We desire candidates with a cross section of these skills:

• Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
• Familiarity with current processing pathways for pyrometallurgical emissions treatment systems
• Experience with sulfur gas handling, acid gas scrubbing, and inert atmosphere processing
• Proficiency in data analysis using Microsoft Excel, MATLAB, python, or similar software
• Expertise in sulfur process design and safety

Your role would include:

Salary range: 122,500-168,500
