The position does not provide patient care, exercise clinical privileges, prescribe treatment, or independently practice medicine.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

This position has no formal supervisory authority or responsibility for the direction of employees. The Research Coordinator may provide research mentorship and guidance to medical students and trainees under the direction of the faculty supervisor.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This grant‑funded appointment supports research activities across the study lifecycle, from research planning and protocol development through data management, analysis, documentation, and dissemination of findings. The position is supported through the 2026 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Faculty Research Re‑Entry Grant and is administered by Howard University College of Medicine's Office of Faculty Development & Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (OFD-JEDI). Internal contacts may include faculty, research staff, medical students, residents, trainees, and relevant University offices. The work requires strong organization, attention to detail, confidentiality, adherence to research and institutional requirements, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a collaborative academic environment.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Coordinate day‑to‑day research activities, project timelines, and assigned study deliverables.
  • Support study design, protocol development, research planning, and preparation of study‑related documentation.
  • Assist with institutional and regulatory research documentation, including IRB materials, when required by the assigned project.
  • Manage research data collection, extraction, organization, cleaning, quality checks, and analysis workflows using approved systems and methods.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate research records, datasets, tables, figures, reports, and other project documentation.
  • Conduct literature searches and assist with synthesis of scientific evidence relevant to ongoing research projects.
  • Assist faculty and trainees with preparation and revision of abstracts, manuscripts, conference submissions, presentations, and responses to peer review.
  • Mentor medical students in research methods, data literacy, scientific writing, and responsible research practices under faculty supervision.
  • Coordinate communication with investigators, collaborators, students, and other University stakeholders and track project milestones and deadlines.
  • Complete required institutional and research training and perform other research-related duties assigned by the faculty supervisor.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including scientific and professional communication.
  • Strong organizational, time‑management, and project‑coordination skills with close attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with appropriate supervision and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of research and institutional information.
  • Knowledge of research methods, data quality principles, responsible conduct of research, and research documentation practices.
  • Ability to manage, clean, analyze, and summarize research data and to prepare clear tables and figures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience with REDCap, statistical software, reference‑management software, or related research tools is preferred.
  • Ability to review scientific literature and contribute to abstracts, manuscripts, presentations, and peer‑review responses.
  • Ability to mentor medical students and trainees in research methods and data literacy under faculty direction.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and academic health research is preferred.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
