Job summary

A city prosecution office seeks a Grand Jury Reporter/Stenographer in New York, responsible for taking confidential Grand Jury testimony and transcribing it accurately. Ideal candidates should have a High School Diploma or GED, excellent stenographic skills at 175 wpm, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. A comprehensive benefits package including health insurance and 401(K) is offered. The position may occasionally require work outside standard hours depending on the Grand Jury schedule.

  • Transcribe testimony in a timely manner.
  • Keep accurate records and files of cases.
  • Recite back testimony from notes for Grand Jury
  • Transcribe testimony in a timely manner using Case Catalyst System for ADAs and Judge reviews
  • Keep accurate records and files of cases
  • Use Case Catalyst System with personal dictionary to produce transcripts
  • Take dictation at the rate of 175 wpm on a stenographic machine
  • Perform other duties as required

Job description

The Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor (SNP) is seeking a Grand Jury Reporter/Stenographer for our Grand Jury Unit. In this position, the Grand Jury Reporter is responsible for taking confidential Grand Jury testimony, transcribing daily verbatim testimony introduced before the grand jury such as statements of witnesses, complainants, and defendants.

Responsibilities
  • Take confidential verbatim testimony before a Grand Jury on a stenographic machine
  • Transcribe CDs and/or videos and tapes for Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs)
  • Read back testimony from notes for Grand Jury and/or court proceedings
  • Recite back testimony from notes for Grand Jury
  • Transcribe testimony in a timely manner using Case Catalyst System for ADAs and Judge reviews
  • Keep accurate records and files of cases
  • Use Case Catalyst System with personal dictionary to produce transcripts
  • Take dictation at the rate of 175 wpm on a stenographic machine
  • Perform other duties as required
Educational Requirements / Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED required or an Associate's Degree in Court Reporting from an institution accredited by the National Court Reporters Association.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment
  • Must be able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to take dictation at the rate of 175 wpm
Other Requirements
  • At the time of the appointment interview, you will be required to demonstrate your proficiency to take two‑voice dictation, using a stenotype machine, at the rate of 175 words per minute and to transcribe the same.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required for this position

Note: Generally, hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; however, work outside those hours may occasionally be necessary depending on the Grand Jury schedule.
