Job summary

Michigan Medicine seeks a motivated report writer to join the Clinical Trials Management Systems Team. You will translate business questions into clear requirements and deliver reliable reports and dashboards to support CTSO operations and unit performance.

Collaborate with clinicians and operational staff, learn the CTMS data models, and contribute to scalable reporting infrastructure across the medical school. A hybrid/remote work arrangement is available.

Qualifications

Department Overview

Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays a role in the success of Michigan Medicine by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with technology-related information, products, and support. HITS also provides institutional expertise related to IT strategy, security, infrastructure, and resource management.

Division Overview

The Academic IT (AcadIT) division in Health Information & Technology Services (HITS) serves both the education and research communities at the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS). We engage faculty, students, and staff to provide a holistic portfolio of software and applications, infrastructure, device support, and custom projects to promote innovation and excellence. AcadIT is comprised of three areas that work in concert to provide support: 1) Application Services - focused on product management and support for vendor applications; 2) Software Delivery - focused on building custom applications when a vendor solution is not available and offering secure application environments; 3) Technical Services & Engagement - focused on providing support for high-performance computing, device management, data integration, and scientific programming and engagement and outreach with our customers.

Job Summary

Are you skilled at working with customers to clarify needs, especially when requirements are incomplete or ambiguous? This role requires someone who can ask the right questions, identify gaps, translate business goals into clear requirements, and develop practical solutions to complex challenges. The Clinical Trials Management Systems Team is responsible for maintaining a portfolio of applications to support clinical trials and clinical research. We are seeking a motivated, dynamic report writer to join our team of experienced report writers and business analysts to support the operations of our enterprise-wide clinical trials management systems and the Medical School's Clinical Trials Support Office (CTSO) and Units. By collaborating with clinical and operational stakeholders to understand reporting needs, you will translate business questions into clear requirements and deliver a reliable portfolio of reports and dashboards. These reports are critical to daily CTSO operations - supporting planning, monitoring, and decision-making - and provide leadership with actionable insight into performance, compliance, and overall operational health across units.

You Should Have Demonstrated Experience In
  • Databases, data models, query development
  • Data visualization and dashboard creation with a variety of tools
  • Data management, including complex requirements gathering, analysis, design, development, and maintenance
  • Use of tools for version control and collaborative development to maintain reliable, auditable report code
  • Performing feasibility studies evaluating various solutions for complex business challenges
You Would Also Be Expected To
  • Quickly become familiar with a variety of Clinical Trials Management Systems and their data models
  • Provide technical support to the CTMS Team and HITS Infrastructure partners
  • Participate in application upgrades and other application maintenance activities
  • Provide support to various business and technical groups as required for development and deployment of required reporting infrastructure
  • Build domain knowledge in the fields of research administration and clinical research
  • Effectively communicate with management, co-workers, teams, business offices, and subject matter experts
  • Work in a fast-paced environment to meet timelines
Senior Level
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 5 to 7 years of systems analysis/programming in a business environment.
  • 3+ years of experience with analytics, reporting and business intelligence tools such as Tableau, iReport, Jasper Reports, Crystal Reports, etc.
Intermediate Level
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 3 to 5 years systems analysis/programming activities in a business environment.
  • 2+ years of experience with analytics, reporting and business intelligence tools such as Tableau, iReport, Jasper Reports, Crystal Reports, etc.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience in programming in complex technical environments with an emphasis on health care or clinical research
  • 5+ years of experience with relational database systems (e.g., Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server) and SQL development tools
  • 1-3 years of experience with analytics, reporting and business intelligence tools such as Tableau, iReport, Jasper Reports, Crystal Reports, etc.
  • Experience with determining project objectives and requirements, anticipating and solving problems, and developing standards and guidelines for diverse activities
  • Excellent organizational, research, analytical and independent problem-solving skills
  • Team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and facilitate group discussions
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, understand technical information, and communicate it to others using clear, concise, and user-friendly language
  • Demonstrated ability to approach information management efforts from both technical and business perspectives
  • Stay current on emerging trends and tools and recommend implementation opportunities to enhance the reporting portfolio
  • Master's degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Experience with development processes and tools, version control systems, test-driven development, and build tools
