Division Overview

The HITS Academic IT division serves both the education and research communities at Michigan Medicine. We engage faculty, students, and staff to provide a holistic portfolio of software, applications, infrastructure, device support, and custom projects to promote innovation and excellence.

Job Summary

HITS is looking for a senior-level candidate to fulfill the role of an Academic IT Liaison. You will report to the Manager of the HITS Academic Engagement team and will be a guide for Michigan Medicine (MM) faculty. You will accomplish this through active engagement with units, departments (basic sciences and clinical), centers, and numerous Medical School IT governance committees. You will work with researchers and educators to identify and aid in the use of technology services that will best support their academic activities. Your work is directly aligned with the education and discovery strategic pillars of the Medical School. You will work collaboratively within the Academic Engagement team, build relationships with other HITS and Campus IT teams, and navigate a broad portfolio of IT service offerings available on Campus. Responsibilities
  • Provide faculty with one-on-one facilitative project support, recommending sustainable solutions that can also be used by other faculty
  • Build and deliver appropriate training for Michigan Medicine faculty in cooperation with other staff
  • Identify appropriate information technology services and approaches that help to remove barriers to achieving academic goals
  • Facilitate connections between faculty and the appropriate IT services and personnel
  • Leverage technical knowledge to uncover unseen barriers to success in delivering appropriate and effective IT service solutions
  • Participate in IT governance committees and units that directly help the Education and Research strategic pillars of the Medical School
  • In the performance of all job tasks, deliver excellent customer service and provide clear communications
  • Focus on service improvement and recommend changes to services, products, and processes within the HITS and larger University of Michigan IT organizations
  • Provide recommendations for new and expanded IT services based on analysis and understanding of customer requirements, and advocate for the services on behalf of researchers and educators
  • Manage customer expectations and provide clear responses
  • Develop a network with other facilitators, both on- and off-campus
  • Understand and use existing solutions, both on-and-off campus
  • Protect institutional data and privacy, and ensure the excellent delivery of solutions and services by following divisional, Michigan Medicine and University policies.
Senior Level
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant research or technical field is required for this position, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience delivering relevant IT services and support
Intermediate Level
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2-3 years of IT related experience

  • Experience translating and communicating complex information to users with varying levels of technical aptitude

  • Demonstrated experience learning new skills and applying that knowledge to solve complex problems
  • Experience bridging customer needs to relevant IT services
  • Experience working in an academic medical center
  • Experience writing grant proposals and technical writing
  • Experience with IT services offered at the University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine, including but not limited to services provided by HITS, Advanced Research Computing, and Information Technology Services
  • Proven experience in developing, deploying, and supporting a wide range of foundational IT services, including:
    • Networks and network infrastructure
    • Storage systems and solutions
    • Operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS, or equivalent)
    • Both Enterprise and specialized research applications
    • Cloud computing platforms and services (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
    • High-performance computing
    • Database management and administration
    • Workstation-attached devices and instrumentation
  • Troubleshooting complex technical issues across multiple systems and teams
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity practices, identity and access management, and data protection
  • Knowledge of compliance frameworks (e.g., HIPAA, NIST 800-53, NIST 800-171)
  • Experience mentoring junior IT staff and fostering knowledge-sharing across teams
  • Knowledge of virtualization, containerization (VMware, Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
