Our Specialty Products Underwriting Manager is responsible for ensuring all specialty products loans are underwritten in accordance with company and investor guidelines, following company policies and procedures. The role serves as a subject matter expert in non-qualified specialty products underwriting for wholesale and correspondent channels. The manager makes sound underwriting decisions, ensuring compliance with legal and policy requirements, and performs duties in accordance with company policies, procedures, and all applicable regulations. The target pay range for this position is $140,000 - $170,000 per year, plus a quarterly bonus.
What You’ll Do
- Manage a team of specialized product underwriters (non-agency/purchase products) across wholesale and correspondent channels.
- Perform management responsibilities including hiring, training, performance monitoring, rewarding, disciplining, addressing complaints, and resolving issues, in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
- Mentor and train underwriters to ensure high performance.
- Monitor performance quality, technical abilities, and risk analysis of underwriters.
- Provide technical and guideline training, recommend improvements, and conduct ongoing training as needed.
- Provide operational leadership and establish controls to maintain and improve quality and service standards.
- Define and monitor productivity standards and performance goals, ensuring they are met regularly.
- Oversee pipeline activities to meet timelines, ensure proper customer follow-up, and maintain quality control scores.
- Analyze LOS production reports and update senior management on turnaround times.
- Review files for quality, provide second signatures outside of authorities.
- Assist in developing underwriting guidelines and training materials, staying updated on industry changes affecting company policies.
- Work with senior management to establish department goals and objectives.
- Develop processes to improve team and department performance, reduce costs, and enhance customer service.
- Respond to post-funding audits, investor reviews, and quality control reports, implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Recruit and interview candidates for underwriting positions.
- Assign files to balance workload.
- Perform underwriting duties during peak periods or staff shortages.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need
- Expert knowledge of specialty products underwriting, including FNMA, FHLMC, and government guidelines.
- Ability to understand complex issues, negotiate, and integrate diverse viewpoints.
- Decision-making skills impacting department credibility, operations, and service.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work for others on both short- and long-term basis.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with various management levels and adapt communication styles.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Proficiency with PC skills, including Excel and Word.
- Consistent high performance in all situations.
- Ability to understand complex problems and explore alternative solutions collaboratively.
- Strong negotiation skills.
- Experience working in a paperless environment is preferred.
