Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs seeks a Medical Records Technician (Coder) in the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the VA Illiana Health Care System. MRTs classify data from health records and assign alpha-numeric codes for diagnoses and procedures.

This GS-10 role requires mastery certification or equivalent, with experience supervising coding staff and ensuring coding accuracy to support reimbursement. Telework: available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor or higher not required if qualifying experience and education are met.
• Mastery level coding certification or eligible for coding certification required.
• One year of specialized experience in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, coding, and health records.
• Education/experience combinations acceptable per VA qualification standards.

Responsibilities

• Oversee coding staff and program management of a coding unit.
• Assign codes from ICD, CPT, and HCPCS for inpatient and outpatient services.
• Ensure coding accuracy in alignment with guidelines and VERAs program requirements.
• Provide education, address audit findings, and monitor productivity.
• Collaborate with revenue, compliance, and clinical staff to maintain documentation integrity.
