Job summary

Babylist is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead the Search team in Canada, building an in-house search capability from the ground up. You’ll own the direction, architect the indexing and retrieval stack, and drive AI-enabled enhancements across products, guides, and registries.

You’ll collaborate with product, design and data, coaching engineers and delivering high-impact results for millions of parents using Babylist to plan and shop for their registries.

Qualifications

• Hands-on search experience: building and running search in production, including indexing, retrieval and ranking and query understanding.
• Experience evaluating search quality: offline and online, including relevance judgments and A/B tests.
• A focus on the user: you use query data, behavior and judgment about result quality to decide what to build, and you can connect a search change to what shoppers do, and to conversion or revenue.
• Comfort building from zero: you can define the problem, design the system and own it end to end.
• You measure yourself by impact: a customer outcome, or a system a dozen teams come to depend on.

Responsibilities

• Build search in-house and choose the architecture for indexing, retrieval and serving, planning a seamless migration.
• Define what a good result is and measure it through query understanding, ranking and signals.
• Unify search across everything we show, across items sold and from other retailers, including ranking across items we don’t sell next to those we do.
• Decide how search and recommendations fit together, bringing registry data and user signals into results.
• Make search conversational by collaborating with the Addie AI registry assistant on natural language queries.
