Job summary

Samsara is seeking a Staff Embedded Software Engineer for its United States/Canada remote team. The role centers on firmware for millions of devices, selecting hardware, bringing up new boards, and building data-processing firmware across constrained environments.

You will own drivers, bootloaders, updates, and cross-layer system design, collaborating with hardware, cloud, and QA teams to ensure robust, low-power solutions in a scalable platform.

Qualifications

• 8+ years building firmware for resource-constrained systems.
• Fluency in C and strong understanding of compiler/linker behavior.
• Bare-metal and RTOS experience (Zephyr, FreeRTOS or equivalent).
• Experience bringing up new boards and prototyping hardware.
• Fluency with SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and ADC interfaces.
• Strong debugging skills with oscilloscopes and analyzers.
• Staff-level scope with cross-team coordination.
• Ability to document designs and decisions for reuse.

Responsibilities

• Shape hardware decisions: select SoC, flash/RAM, sensors, and validate on prototypes.
• Bring up new boards and ensure interfaces (SPI/I2C/UART) work end-to-end.
• Own drivers, bootloaders, firmware updates, and core device management layers.
• Design low-power protocols and hardware management for long battery life.
• Collaborate with product, full-stack, mobile and quality teams to ensure data integrity.
• Set high bar for engineers and drive iterative delivery at scale.
