Customer.io is hiring a remote Staff Software Engineer, Backend to lead the architecture of high-scale messaging systems in Go. You’ll shape direction across squads, drive critical reliability and performance improvements, and mentor senior engineers to raise the team’s capabilities.

The role emphasizes cloud-native design in AWS/GCP, extensive Go expertise, and cross-functional collaboration to move architecture forward while delivering measurable impact for billions of messages daily.

Qualifications

• 10+ years building scalable, distributed systems in Go or similar statically typed language.
• Proven track record designing production-ready systems with throughput, cost and reliability tradeoffs.
• Experience designing observability, metrics, alerting, rollback and backpressure as first-class concerns.

Responsibilities

• Shape the technical direction of distributed messaging systems in Go and set architectural standards.
• Drive cross-squad initiatives, align leadership, and raise engineering bar with reusable frameworks.
• Mentor engineers, contribute to design reviews, and document patterns for broader reuse.
