Job summary

Sentara Health is seeking a Senior Underwriter for a remote role focused on underwriting employer groups with high complexity and developing competitive, profitable pricing. The role leverages claims analysis, actuarial concepts, and funding arrangements across Fully Insured and Self-Funded programs.

You will mentor underwriters and trainees, support high-profile cases and RFPs, and collaborate with Sales, Actuarial, and Leadership to drive underwriting strategy and process improvements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree REQUIRED
• Underwriter – 7 years of experience REQUIRED
• Health Plan experience preferred

Responsibilities

• The Senior Underwriter is responsible for underwriting employer groups of high complexity and leading strategic rating decisions that balance competitiveness and profitability.
• This role applies deep expertise in claims analysis, actuarial concepts, and funding arrangements, including proficiency in Fully Insured and Self-Funded underwriting, as well as market dynamics, to develop sound pricing with limited or complex data.
• The Senior Underwriter serves as a mentor and subject‑matter expert for Underwriters and Trainees, supports high-profile cases and RFPs, and collaborates with Sales, Actuarial, and Leadership.
• This position also contributes to process improvement, training development, and underwriting strategy.
