Job summary

MongoDB, Inc. is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Server Query Optimization team. You will help design a distributed, schema-flexible query optimizer and contribute to the lifecycle of each query from parsing to plan selection.

This remote role (U.S. or Canada, ET/CT time zones) requires strong C++ skills, experience with large codebases, and a solid foundation in database internals. You’ll mentor teammates and help shape the technical roadmap.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in data management systems, distributed systems, or large-scale backend engineering.
• Experience building production-level code for large user bases with robust design and quality.
• CS degree or equivalent with strong data structures and algorithms.
• Experience with large code bases written in C++ or another systems language.
• Strong foundation in core database internals; interest in compilers or distributed storage is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Innovate in the area of flexible-schema query optimization systems.
• Research state-of-the-art query systems to inform design.
• Provide technical vision and direction based on product and industry trends.
• Set initiative level strategy, architect plans, and lead the team to execution.
• Advise management on roadmap decisions and architectural designs.
• Design and implement features related to query performance, language enhancements, and diagnostics.
• Coordinate with other engineers and teams to propagate changes.
• Mentor and grow team members through coaching and leading by example.
