Nelnet is seeking a Senior Software Engineer on the New Ventures team to design, develop, and maintain software applications. This role offers remote, full-time work and requires independent ownership of complex projects across Python and Java.

You will mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and drive continuous improvement while collaborating with stakeholders. Expect to work in an Agile environment, apply AI-assisted development tools, and contribute to scalable microservices and cloud

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of related experience.
• Shipped production software in Python and Java.

Responsibilities

• Design & Development: Design robust solutions for complex projects and build scalable software applications that power new business initiatives
• Code Excellence: Write, test, and implement efficient, maintainable code that meets quality standards and performance requirements
• Agile & Adaptive Development: Work within an Agile environment, respond to change quickly, re-focus development efforts, and adapt to evolving requirements
• Ownership & Independence: Manage projects from conception through deployment with minimal supervision, owning technical decisions and outcomes
• Code Quality: Perform code audits, testing, and troubleshooting throughout the development lifecycle to ensure high-quality, maintainable applications
• Continuous Improvement: Audit existing systems, identify optimization opportunities, and advocate for technical improvements across the team
• Mentorship: Guide and mentor junior and mid-level engineers, providing code reviews, technical guidance, and professional development support
• Collaborative Leadership: Advocate for continuous improvements, influence technical decisions, and work as a solution-oriented partner with team members and stakeholders
• Professional Development: Continuously update technical knowledge and skills to stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies
• Strategic Input: Make recommendations for future development options and technology choices to support business objectives
