Job summary

Baker Tilly Advisory Group, LP is seeking a Payroll Consultant to support payroll engagements nationwide, with mostly remote work but within 50 miles of select Baker Tilly offices.

You will help assess and improve payroll processes, perform multistate compliance reviews, and assist with tax filings. The role requires strong Excel skills, experience with major payroll systems, and excellent communication.

Qualifications

• 3 years payroll experience, preferably in a consulting firm, payroll provider, or in-house payroll function.
• Bachelor's degree preferred; experience can be considered in lieu of degree.
• Strong understanding of payroll processes, compliance requirements, and multistate regulations.
• Experience with payroll tax forms and filings.
• Familiarity with payroll systems such as ADP, Workday, SAP, Oracle/PeopleSoft, Paycom, Paycor.
• CPP certification strongly preferred (or in progress).

Responsibilities

• Support payroll consulting engagements across a range of clients, industries, and geographies.
• Assist in assessing and improving client payroll processes, controls, and procedures.
• Perform multistate payroll compliance reviews, including federal, state, and local regulations.
• Support payroll tax activities, including preparation and review of forms (e.g., 941, 941-X, W-2C).
• Assist with payroll setup and configuration, including earnings, deductions, and tax treatments.
• Analyze payroll data to identify discrepancies, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
• Support reviews related to employee classification, wage treatment, and overtime calculations.
• Research and apply payroll regulations, including reciprocity and other multistate considerations.
• Collaborate with internal teams and clients to deliver timely, accurate, and high-quality work.
• Communicate payroll concepts and findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Contribute to project deliverables and ensure work is completed on time and aligned with expectations.
