Job summary

Houston Methodist is seeking a Senior Coding Specialist who applies correct coding conventions to patient encounters in a clinical environment. The role abstracts diagnoses and procedures, reviews and corrects coding errors in the EHR, and assists with denials appeals while mentoring coding staff.

Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent, five years of coding experience, and CCS or CPC certification.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent education.
• Five years of professional coding experience.
• Must have CCS or CPC certification (AHIMA/AAPC).

Responsibilities

• Communicates regularly with physicians and PO CBO staff to clarify diagnosis and procedures.
• Collaborates with management to reduce claim denials by providing verbal and written communication.
• Assists with training Coding Specialists and cross-training of department staff.
• Codes and abstracts medical records for reimbursement using current coding conventions and tools (e.g., 3M encoder).
• Reviews records to verify diagnoses and procedures for charge reviews and denied claims; submits appeals as needed.
