Job summary

Northwell Career Site seeks a certified medical coder to perform coding and abstracting for patient records with flexible remote hours, 7am to 7pm windows across Sun-Thurs or Tue-Sat.

The role requires 3–5 years of coding experience, credentials such as CCS or CPC, and strong knowledge of coding guidelines and CMS rules. You will ensure accurate, compliant coding and support revenue integrity.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 3–5 years of technical experience in coding.
• Certifications CCS, CPC, CCSP, CIC, COC, RHIA or RHIT required.

Responsibilities

• Analyze medical records to ensure accurate diagnosis and procedure coding.
• Reference coding guidelines and resources to assign codes.
• Apply UHDDS definitions and CMS rules for coding accuracy.
• Code diagnoses and procedures and POA indicators.
• Determine discharge disposition per CMS rules.
• Complete reviews independently to avoid workflow delays.
• Manage multiple demands to meet turnaround standards.
• Report SPARCS data elements and other required data.
• Apply CPT guidelines for outpatient coding as applicable.
• Assign discharge physicians in the system.
• Generate compliant physician queries to clarify docs.
• Understand impact of coding decisions on revenue cycle.
• Educate physicians on documentation improvements and accuracy.
• Attend hospital education to stay updated on coding changes.
• Perform moderately complex tasks with some deviation from standard.
