Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Senior Java Spring Boot Developer for modernizing legacy systems and delivering cloud-based microservices. The role emphasizes API design, security, and reliable deployments in a remote US setting.

The candidate will lead API design, migrate monoliths to service-oriented architectures, and optimize databases while collaborating with multiple teams. AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and GitHub Copilot experience are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Five or more years of professional experience developing applications with Java, Spring Boot, and the Spring Batch framework.
• Strong hands-on proficiency with modern Java, Spring Boot, Hibernate, and REST API development.
• Demonstrated experience designing, building, deploying, and maintaining APIs in AWS cloud environments.
• Experience developing and supporting Java-based microservices and integrating distributed systems.
• Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and AWS RDS.
• Strong understanding of database performance optimization, including query tuning, indexing, connection pooling, and caching.
• Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm.
• Experience with OAuth and application authentication and authorization concepts.
• Familiarity with Git for source control and collaborative development.
• Knowledge of secure coding practices, application security, and data protection.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

Responsibilities

• Modernize legacy monolithic applications into scalable, service-oriented Java microservices.
• Lead API design and development using REST and, where applicable, GraphQL.
• Develop production-grade Java services and maintain code quality.
• Lead database modernization while preserving data integrity, consistency, and availability.
• Optimize database performance through query tuning, indexing, caching, and migrations.
• Deploy and operate cloud workloads on AWS with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm.
• Integrate APIs and services with internal platforms and external systems.
• Apply secure development practices including OAuth-based access and encryption.
• Improve reliability by monitoring performance and troubleshooting production issues.
• Promote AI-assisted development with GitHub Copilot to aid coding productivity.
• Collaborate with engineering and cross-functional teams to establish patterns and maintainable delivery.
• Support quality and version control with testing frameworks and Git.
