Job summary

Commerce is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer (AI Agent) to design and implement AI agents using Go and Python, focusing on orchestration, sub-agent architecture, tool integration, and safe action execution.

You will own eval-driven development, build golden datasets and evaluators, refine prompts, and integrate agents with MCP servers and backend tools. This role is remote-first with optional Austin/Atlanta/London collaboration spaces.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend or full-stack development experience.
• Hands-on experience building agentic AI/LLM applications in production.
• Strong prompt engineering, tool calling, and orchestration skills.
• Designing and building robust APIs and data integrations.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and iterate on AI agents in Go/Python with orchestrator/sub-agent architecture.
• Own eval-driven development with golden datasets and regression suites.
• Develop and refine prompts and model configurations.
• Integrate agents with MCP servers and backend tools, defining safe contracts.
• Instrument agents with tracing, metrics, and cost tracking; drive quality improvements.
• Collaborate with product designers and frontend engineers on conversational UX.
• Prototype agents quickly, then harden to GA quality.
• Drive architecture decisions and mentor other engineers in agent engineering.
