Job summary

BigCommerce is building a new team to deliver a suite of conversational AI agents spanning the B2B commerce lifecycle. As a Senior Backend Engineer you will design orchestration, sub-agent architecture, and tool integration using Go/Python.

You will own eval-driven development, build golden datasets and scoring, and drive guardrails for safe prompt execution, while collaborating with product designers and frontend engineers in a fast-paced hybrid environment in Austin or Atlanta.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend or full-stack software development.
• Hands-on experience with agentic AI/LLM applications.
• Experience with LLM evaluation: datasets, scorers, and metrics.
• Strong understanding of prompt engineering, tool calling, and agent orchestration patterns.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and iterate AI agents in Go/Python using an orchestrator/sub-agent architecture.
• Own eval-driven development: build and maintain golden datasets, scorers, and regression suites.
• Integrate agents with MCP servers and backend tools, defining safe tool-call contracts and guardrails.
• Collaborate with product designers and frontend engineers to deliver intuitive conversational experiences.
• Mentor other engineers in agent engineering practices.
