Job summary

Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Android, to support the App Experience and App Growth teams within the Core Experiences engineering group. This fully remote role requires four hours daily between 15:00 UTC and 21:00 UTC, aligning with a global development schedule.

You will design and build scalable Android components, optimize performance for a multilingual audience, and collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver high-quality

Qualifications

• Bachelor's and 5-10+ years Android development experience.
• Proficient in Kotlin, XML, Jetpack Compose; familiar with Android architectures.
• Experience optimizing Android performance across conditions.
• Experience adding webview-wrapped experiences to native apps (iOS/Android).
• Experience maintaining cross‑platform mobile applications.
• Experience building mobile games or interactive experiences.
• Experience with data science, ML, or AI; familiarity with Wikimedia content tools.
• Experience scaling small engineering teams using agentic coding.
• Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate in CS/STEM or equivalent.
• Prior experience with MediaWiki or Wikimedia projects.

Responsibilities

• Identifies risks early and helps tradeoffs across quality, velocity, and user impact.
• Improving Android app experiences for a global, multilingual audience.
• Leads system design for medium projects and builds accessible components.
• Focus on testing, observability, and debuggability; instrument features for analysis.
• Partners with product, design, analysts, and native app engineers to shape pragmatic solutions.
• Prioritises high-impact opportunities and clarifies sequencing with the team.
