Job summary

UnitedHealth Group's Optum unit is seeking a Senior AI/ML Engineer to build production-grade LLM agents and Retrieval-Augmented Generation pipelines that automate detection, triage, and remediation of platform and application issues. You will work at the intersection of machine learning engineering, observability, and developer experience, collaborating with SRE and InfoSec to deploy secure AI in our software workflows.

This role offers telecommuting from anywhere in the U.S.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of software or machine learning engineering experience.
• 4+ years of Python experience including agent frameworks (e.g., LangGraph, LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, or CrewAI).
• 2+ years building with LLMs, including prompts, tool calls, and multi-step orchestration.
• 2+ years designing and shipping RAG systems in production with embeddings, vector databases, and retrieval evaluation.
• 2+ years integrating third-party APIs and building backend services for production.
• 2+ years of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP), containers, and CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions with a focus on responsible AI use.
• Build and deploy production LLM agents to automate detection, triage, and remediation.
• Design and tune RAG pipelines over runbooks, logs, code, and docs, including embedding and vector store design.
• Implement agent orchestration, including tool calling, multi-step planning, and memory/state management.
• Build infrastructure for agents, including guardrails, human-in-the-loop paths, and fallbacks.
• Own model and prompt engineering, including selection, optimization, and cost/latency tuning.
• Create evaluation pipelines and metrics for agent and RAG quality.
• Integrate agents with observability and security platforms via APIs and MCP interfaces.
• Evaluate emerging AI trends and contribute reusable patterns and documentation.
