Job summary

Optum is seeking a Sr. AI/ML Engineer with a strong Java background to design, develop, and deploy AI-powered healthcare solutions. You will build microservices using Java 17/21, Spring Boot, and enterprise APIs, while integrating HL7 FHIR standards and Da Vinci guides across clinical domains.

You will work remotely from anywhere in the U.S. and contribute to scalable, event-driven architectures with Kafka, Spring Data JPA, and cloud platforms (AWS/Azure).

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience designing and deploying microservices and RESTful APIs using Java 17/21 and Spring Boot.
• 3+ years of relational DB experience (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL) using Spring Data JPA or Hibernate.
• 2+ years building or leveraging enterprise AI tools to optimize workflows and business processes.
• 2+ years of experience implementing event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka.
• 2+ years of experience deploying scalable applications in cloud environments (AWS or Azure) using Docker and Kubernetes.
• 2+ years of experience setting up CI/CD automation pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps) and version control using Git/GitHub.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions with emphasis on responsible use of AI.
• Leverage enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate tasks, and drive continuous improvement.
• Evaluate emerging trends to inform solution design and strategic innovation.
• Build and maintain enterprise RESTful APIs and microservices using Java 17/21 and Spring Boot.
• Implement HL7 FHIR and Da Vinci Implementation Guides (CRD, DTR, PAS) across prior authorization, claims, member, provider, and eligibility domains.
• Build event-driven backend components using Apache Kafka and integrate with relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL) utilizing Spring Data JPA and Hibernate.
• Support CI/CD pipeline automation, containerization, and cloud deployment strategies using Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud infrastructure (AWS/Azure).
• Establish end-to-end monitoring, logging, and performance observability across distributed systems using Splunk, ELK, Prometheus, and Grafana.
